Regular readers (are there any?) will likely be wondering, What the heck is going on? So many posts in so short a time! And they’re all so funny!
Well, maybe not that last part. But the first part, possibly.
As you know if you read the McDonald’s post of a few days back, I will soon (barring catastrophe, as I always say, because me and catastrophe go way back) be off to China. In the course of preparing for this Adventure of a Lifetime (or, may be, the Adventure That Ends My Lifetime), I’ve been going through all my old stuff, in boxes in the garage, and also cleaning up/consolidating files on the computer. What I’ve realized is that I’m almost forty-three years old. And I’ve been writing since, if you believe my mother — and she’s a fine Christian woman who wouldn’t lie, though she would happily and guiltlessly exaggerate — since I was three. That makes a total of forty years of writing…a whole crapload, that is, in boxes, on hard drives, in notebooks and journals and binders, oh my.
I have entertained notions of someone going through all this, after I die, and then, like van Gogh, I’ll be discovered posthumously. (No, I’m not claiming to be another van Gogh. Except insofar as I’m stupid enough to cut off my ear for love, as well. I haven’t, yet, but one of these days…somebody’ll say, “If you truly loved me, you’d cut off your ear, like van Gogh did,” and out’ll come the shears.) But why wait? Why not be discovered prehumously? Or at least give myself a fighting chance, by showing the world all the stuff I’ve written during my forty-year career?
Relax. I’m not going to post everything. Only the stuff I think is worth viewing by the (discriminating?) public. But there is quite a lot of that. And the pile, if that’s what we have to call it, keeps getting bigger: several of the recent pieces were written the day they were posted. My goal is to post at least one piece per day, and we’ll see how long that lasts. If I miss a day it’s only because I’m busy doing other things. The inventory is large enough to last until, I should think, I leave for China…or even beyond…we shall see.
I am in a prose phase, as opposed to a video-making phase. Some of the pieces I have posted, and will be posting, are repurposed ideas for The Price of Tea in China. But they work as prose, too. Perhaps not quite as well as they would have, but it’s a heck of a lot to easier to write them out on the page than to try to film them when it’s me and only me doing the filming. With luck you won’t notice too much of a difference.
So expect more, much more. We’re just getting started. If you like what you read — or you hate it — or you have no opinion — do let me know. I can use all the feedback I can get.
And if you want to send great wads of cash, why, that’s okay, too.
